Due to the continuing increase in visits to the Emergency Department of the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH), it was recognized that a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) facility is essential to ensure that patients are seen and treated in the most appropriate setting and to ensure compliance with non-admitted Patient Experience Times (PET). Local Injury Units within an Emergency Care Network provide care for non-life-threatening or limb-threatening injuries for a limited number of hours of patient access. They form a differentiated unscheduled pathway to divert patients away from undifferentiated visits to the main emergency department of the MMUH.
