Description

The project includes the restoration and return to use of the Western and Eastern Docks complex in Heraklion. The building complex is protected according to the proclamation included in the Government Gazette 21-2-1947, with which the existing remains of the Venetian docks were declared as historical preserved monuments, among other medieval monuments of the city of Heraklion, Crete (Government Gazette 45/Α/18-3-1947). The Western Docks consist of four serially arranged vaulted spaces and are part of the Old Docks (Arsenali Vecchi) complex, which was built in 1556. A short distance to the west of them is the so-called Western Warehouse. Of the Eastern Docks (Arsenali Nuovi and Nuovissimi), which were built in 1608, one vaulted space is preserved. At the Western Docks, works are planned to strengthen the masonry (injections, additions), jointing, cleaning and maintenance of stones, maintenance of plasters, new roof covering and addressing moisture with the construction of a drainage system. Also, the integration of new constructions is planned, namely glazing, canopies, reception desk, amphitheater, lighting poles and new electromechanical installations as well as new paving.
