The canal network of the automatic wagon transport system (AWT) connects the buildings at the University Hospital Düsseldorf and ensures the supply and disposal of the hospital operation. The AWT system is operated with two different transport systems: a rail-guided, ceiling-mounted system (EHB - electric overhead monorail) and an automated guided vehicle system (AGV). Both systems are connected by transfer stations, where the AWT containers are transshipped. Special AWT lifts transport the wagons within the buildings from the underground AWT area to the respective target level. The AWT canal network has grown steadily and now extends 550m in both the north-south and east-west directions, with a total length of approximately 3.0 km. Since it is planned to connect further buildings to the canal system in the future, the building authority requires a future-proof overall fire protection concept.
