Germany – Architectural, construction, engineering and inspection services – Ertüchtigung KA Kamp-Bornhofen - Los 01
Description
The Kamp-Bornhofen wastewater treatment plant is operated by the Verbandsgemeindewerke Loreley and is approximately 30 years old. It was originally designed for around 1,700 population equivalents (PE) and constructed in a compact design within an operational hall. Based on current operational data evaluations (2018-2022), the actual connection size is already at 2,163 PE. Taking into account planned residential and commercial developments, a future load of 2,274 PE is anticipated. For a future-proof design, the new plant was therefore sized for 2,700 PE. The existing plant has reached its hydraulic and material performance limit. At the same time, the permitting authority has announced stricter discharge conditions. In particular, a reduction of the phosphorus limit value from the current 6 mg/l to 2 mg/l in the future is planned. Without a fundamental upgrade, the sustainable compliance with water law requirements as well as the further settlement development in the catchment area cannot be ensured. The objective of the project is therefore the sustainable expansion and modernisation of the wastewater treatment plant to ensure the future expansion size, to comply with the stricter discharge values and to continuously improve water protection in the catchment area of the Rhine. As part of a feasibility study, several technical variants were examined. A conventional activated sludge process with horizontally flowing secondary settling (Variant 1.2) was identified as the preferred variant. The planned measures include in particular: - Construction of a new screening-grit removal-compact unit - Construction of a new aeration tank (approx. 965 m³) - Construction of a new horizontally flowing secondary settling tank (68 m² surface area) - Construction of a new sludge storage tank (approx. 310 m³) - Construction of a new discharge measuring structure - Construction of an operational building for pumps, blowers and electrical engineering. (In the present case, the building does not serve as a classic high-rise building, but essentially functions purely as a structural and functional shell for the machine technology to be accommodated. The building geometry and physical requirements are dictated by the process engineering parameters of the machine technology.) The design is carried out according to DWA-A 131. The future discharge values meet the stricter requirements for CSB, BSB5, nitrogen and, in particular, phosphorus (≤ 2 mg/l). Special challenges of the project are the location in the designated floodplain of the Rhine, the confined site conditions between the railway line and the federal highway, and the need for implementation during ongoing operations. The construction measure will therefore be implemented in several construction phases to ensure wastewater treatment throughout the entire construction period. The measure makes a significant contribution to water protection, particularly to the reduction of nutrient inputs into the Rhine, and at the same time ensures the municipal provision of infrastructure and the further urban development of the municipality of Kamp-Bornhofen.
