With the acquisition of the former St. Hedwig clinic site in 2024, the municipality of Illingen has made a conscious and forward-looking decision regarding the future development of this site, which is essential for the central location. By acquiring the site, the municipality has actively taken responsibility for its future development. The former St. Hedwig rehabilitation clinic is closely linked to the history and daily life of the municipality of Illingen. For more than a century, people have been medically treated, rehabilitated, and cared for here. Many residents associate the site with personal memories – as a workplace, a place of recovery, or a place of care for relatives. As part of a deliberately broad and intensively conducted citizen participation process lasting several months, the population had the opportunity to contribute their ideas, wishes, and visions for the future development of the site and thus co-determine the content-related guidelines for the development. The buildings of the former St. Hedwig rehabilitation clinic were mostly built in the 1950s and 1960s. The original and first hospital building dates back to 1911. There is no listed building protection. The entire site has served as a hospital or rehabilitation clinic for more than a century. The former hospital (currently approx. 15,000 m³ of gross floor area) has been vacant since August 2023, with only a small part of the building still being used as an emergency station. The area is located in the formally designated redevelopment area "Central Location Illingen 2030". The total area is approx. 1.8 ha. This includes the clinic site itself and the opposite parking lot. The municipality of Illingen is the owner of almost all the plots. An area of approx. 600 m² is still owned by the former operator; another area of 42 m² (part of the entrance to the emergency station) belongs to the operators of the station. The building of the station is owned by the municipality and rented to the operator. The entire district is to be revitalised in a future-oriented and sustainable manner.
