The island of Spiekeroog currently has no fibre-optic connection to the mainland and is exclusively connected to the mainland via microwave radio. The resulting poor mobile and internet coverage has significant impacts on tourism and the lives of the island's residents. Consequently, the poor mobile and internet coverage negatively affects the aspects of public services, economy and security. The grant authority intends to remedy the aforementioned supply gaps on the island of Spiekeroog and has therefore submitted an application to the Federal Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMDS) on 14.05.2025 for a grant under the guideline "Promoting the support of the gigabit expansion of telecommunications networks in the Federal Republic of Germany" and has provisionally received a decision on 10.10.2025.
