The Notte Canal in the project area is a navigable waterway and is classified as a Class I waterway. The Notte Canal crosses the road embankment of Schlossstraße at river km 1+730. Immediately upstream of the road crossing is the Königs Wusterhausen lock and the outlet of the Notte Canal to the former mill weir. The mouth of the mill canal is located at km 1+450 on the left bank. The existing complex weir system at the site consists of the mill weir, which is located in the outlet section, the weir (road embankment/lock island), a flood protection weir (double pipe culvert between lock island and mill complex; flood protection outlet) and the traffic facility (lock with upper and lower approach channels). The Land Brandenburg, represented by the State Office for the Environment (LfU), is the party responsible for the lock system, including the approach channel facilities. The latter is also responsible for the tasks of legal flood protection and waterway maintenance of the Notte Canal as a waterway and Class I waterway. In 2019, the construction inspection department of the State Office for the Environment carried out an updated simple inspection of the structural condition. The facility was rated with a structural condition grade of 3 in the overall assessment. The facility is in a satisfactory condition. Stability and usability are only partially guaranteed. The plant technology is only partially functional due to outdated technology and does not meet the currently recognised rules of the art. In 2022, the LfU carried out a renewed inspection of the structural condition. In this, the facility was rated with the condition grade 5 due to the considerable damage and the lack of usability in the overall assessment. In this updated statement, the replacement of the lock was recommended. The lock has been out of operation since April 2022. The necessary measures for the reconstruction of the Königs Wusterhausen lock, including the addition of a flood relief (decoupling of flood relief and lock), are derived from the previously described/specified situation. The flood relief structure is to be constructed taking into account the hydrological expert opinion with the required number of closures (n-1 conditions) and a type of closure that is optimal for the location. In addition to the relief structure, a lock system is to be planned according to the previously described requirements. The Notte Canal is not designated as a priority watercourse in the state concept for the ecological connectivity of Brandenburg's flowing waters. During the planning process, the need for a fish pass is to be critically examined. A needs analysis with a presentation of the possible costs for construction and operation is to be prepared.
