The subject of the project is the general renovation of the Kaiser-Wilhelm Bridge in Trier. The bridge, which was built in 1914, is the second-oldest Moselle crossing in the city after the Roman Bridge and serves as a key inner-city traffic axis connecting the eastern city area with Trier-West and Pallien. The approximately 315 m long bridge structure consists of several substructures of different historical construction methods and materials, including massive arch constructions, foreland and ramp structures. Due to its age, high traffic load and the detected damage and wear, there is a significant need for renovation. In particular, load-bearing and safety-relevant components, bearings, transition structures, railings, protective and guide devices, as well as parts of the drainage system, must be partially renewed or upgraded. Additional requirements arise from environmental impacts, the location above the federal waterway Moselle, the underlying railway line Trier-West, and the requirements of monument protection. The aim of the general renovation is the sustainable improvement of the condition of the structure and the long-term safeguarding of the stability, durability and traffic safety of the bridge. In addition to the structural upgrading and the renewal of essential components, the traffic surfaces are also to be modernised and the conditions for cycling and pedestrian traffic improved. Furthermore, a traffic optimisation of the junction Martinsufer / Georg-Schmitt-Platz is planned. As part of the Europe-wide tendering procedure, all planning and investigation services required for the development and implementation of the renovation concept are awarded. These include, in particular, condition analyses, soil and material investigations, the recalculation of the superstructures, the object and structural design, as well as coordination with authorities, infrastructure operators and funding agencies.
