Germany – Canal construction – Bauvorhaben: Sanierung und Erneuerung Hauptsammler Ost

The ELW, as a statutory sewerage authority, operate a sewer network with a total length of over 800 km. The sewerage infrastructure for wastewater disposal has, in some areas, an age of over 100 years. As critical infrastructure to ensure the required operational safety under all conditions and at all times, uniform safety and quality standards must therefore be maintained at all times. This requires the application of generally accepted rules of technology as minimum standards and, in addition, the operational standards of the ELW. The two main interceptors to the main wastewater treatment plant (Main Interceptor West and East) run largely on the premises of Deutsche Bahn AG and over long distances under the track system of the main station of the state capital Wiesbaden. The rail system under which the Main Interceptor East runs represents a particularly relevant area of the critical infrastructure of the Rhine-Main region. The particular location of the over 100-year-old Main Interceptor East (running longitudinally and transversely under the track system of a terminal station) thus represents, from an operational point of view, a particular relevance for the sewerage authority, going beyond the usual extent. This is also the case, since there is no redundancy for the disposal of wastewater from the eastern city centre to the main wastewater treatment plant. In order to be able to handle the effort arising from the operation of the Main Interceptor East safely and economically in the future, a rehabilitation will be necessary, which enables a service life beyond the usual refinancing periods of the LAWA (Federal/State Working Group on Water).
