The municipality of Adenau operates, among other things, the mechanical-biological central wastewater treatment plant "Adenauer Bach" in Dümpelfeld (KA Dümpelfeld) with a current capacity of approximately 20,000 population equivalents (PE) for the treatment of wastewater from the municipalities of the municipality of Adenau. The plant, which was commissioned in 1993, was designed to achieve the treatment goal of wastewater treatment with simultaneous aerobic sludge stabilization. As a result of the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley on 14/15 July 2021, this plant was also flooded and severely damaged. Particularly severe damage was sustained by the plant and EMSR technology, the operating building including transformer station, control room, emergency power generator and equipment hall/garage, as well as the blower stations, all of which were flooded to a height of approximately 1.5 m to 2.0 m and largely destroyed. While the central wastewater treatment plant in Dümpelfeld was able to resume provisional operation a few weeks after the disaster through the joint efforts of the Adenau wastewater works with the help of a large number of waste disposal specialists, the Bundeswehr, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and other institutions, the two wastewater treatment plants located directly on the Ahr, belonging to the neighbouring municipality of Altenahr in Altenahr (KA Mittelahr) and Mayschoß, were completely destroyed by the flood disaster. Reconstruction of the wastewater treatment plants in the municipality of Altenahr (Mittelahr) cannot be carried out, particularly due to the extensive measures required to realise flood protection and the lack of guarantee of future flood resilience. According to the results of an extensive study commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment on "future-proof wastewater treatment in the Ahr Valley", the municipal councils of Adenau and Altenahr, as the legally responsible wastewater disposal authorities, therefore adopted a resolution in February 2022 to connect the wastewater system of the former Altenahr wastewater treatment plant to the central wastewater treatment plant in Dümpelfeld. In addition, a joint public-law institution (AöR) for wastewater disposal of the two municipalities of Adenau and Altenahr will be established as of 01.01.2026. To be able to receive and treat the wastewater and sludge from both municipalities, the wastewater treatment plant in Dümpelfeld must be rebuilt, reconstructed, expanded and converted to the process management with sludge digestion. According to the current needs assessment, the wastewater treatment plant will be expanded to a capacity of approximately 27,000 PE. The expected incoming water quantities are approximately 250 l/s. An energetically and economically optimized future plant operation is aimed at with the highest possible plant availability. In this context, the possibilities of AI should also be taken into account or used. The use of AI should include the optimization of processes with regard to resource savings and energy efficiency. The aim is to achieve a future wastewater treatment plant operation that is as climate-neutral as possible. Planning with BIM is intended or planned.
