The Klinikum Leverkusen, academic teaching hospital of the University of Cologne, is a hospital for regional high-level care with a highly qualified medical and nursing service offering. More than 2,600 people care for the health and well-being of patients in twelve medical specialties with a total of 746 beds, numerous centres and institutes, as well as in the service departments, subsidiaries and in administration. Doctors, pharmacists, nursing staff, therapists and other professional groups are on duty around the clock. Over the past decades, Klinikum Leverkusen has become one of the largest providers of healthcare services in the region. Due to this continuous growth and various extensions and renovations at the hospital, the walking distances for patients and visitors have become very long and partly confusing. It is now necessary to design this evolved infrastructure in a future-oriented and as climate-neutral as possible. In addition to various other construction measures, the Klinikum Leverkusen is relying on a modern new building in a prominent location to create a new and innovative emergency department and a future-oriented operating theatre centre. The aim is to create a hospital that is not only functional but also patient-friendly and meets the highest demands in terms of comfort and orientation. By combining architecturally thought-out design and optimal routing, the hospital is to become a pioneer in modern healthcare. The modern new building is thus to combine aesthetic design with functional advantages and demonstrate how Klinikum Leverkusen is responding to the increasing demands in the healthcare sector.
