In the course of carrying out construction work, construction vehicles, transport vehicles and construction machinery must regularly enter and exit the work area. For this purpose, particularly in the case of long construction sections, construction access roads within the work area, i.e. in the longitudinal traffic of the motorway, are used. Such access roads lead to additional conflict points with the flowing traffic, which can impair traffic safety or lead to disruptions in the traffic flow. Currently, there are no standards for the training and design of such construction access roads. While construction access roads are generally taken into account in regulations and occupational safety regulations, there are so far only a few scientifically sound findings on their safe and efficient design. The aim of this research project is the systematic investigation of construction access roads within long-term work areas on motorways and the development of scientifically sound recommendations for their planning, design and operation. Furthermore, suitable evaluation criteria are to be developed with which the suitability of different solutions with regard to traffic safety, traffic flow and practicability can be assessed. As a result of the research project, guidelines for the planning, tendering, approval and operation of construction access roads in longitudinal traffic are to be developed. In particular, specifications for the suitable location, development length, signage and marking as well as for traffic engineering measures are to be derived. In addition, proposals for the further development of existing regulations, guidelines, ordinances and technical specifications are to be derived (e.g. RSA, VwV StVO, ZTV SA). The project is intended to contribute to the safe, efficient and regulation-compliant execution of long-term work areas on heavily used federal motorways.
