"Mobility in Germany 2028" Transport policy and planning require reliable, up-to-date and spatially differentiated information on the choice and use of transport modes to develop targeted infrastructure investments and policy measures. Official statistics only partially capture the mobility of private households and economic traffic with small lorries and cars. The Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) as a subordinate authority of the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) is therefore dependent on its own surveys for its tasks. Previous surveys of the Mobility in Germany (MiD) study (2002, 2008, 2017, 2023) need to be updated to reflect new developments. The BASt intends to carry out a nationwide representative survey of at least 35,000 private households and 70,000 individuals in the calendar year 2028. Mobility behaviour, use of transport modes, journey distances and purposes will be recorded. The survey builds on proven methods from previous studies but integrates innovative approaches such as smartphone tracking and improves the inclusion of underrepresented groups. Regional in-depth samples can cover up to 175,000 households. MiD 2028 provides up-to-date mobility indicators for the federal and state governments as well as socio-economic and area-specific mobility patterns. It supports the needs assessment review of the transport modes (rail, road, inland waterway), the further development of the climate protection programme and the planning of sustainable infrastructure. The data basis enables evidence-based transport policy decisions, promotes scientific research and is available to third parties (local authorities, transport companies) for regional in-depth samples. Through methodological developments, it improves the quality of mobility research in Germany in the long term.
