Itärata Oy's task is to plan a rail link from Lentorata to Kouvola via Porvoo, enabling high-speed rail traffic up to the construction phase. The main objectives of the project are to enable faster long-distance rail traffic to Eastern Finland: along the routes of Savo and Karelia to Kuopio, Joensuu and Kainuu, and to connect the city of Porvoo to the rail network of the capital region. The area of influence of the Eastern Rail Line is home to 2 million Finns in seven regions. Itärata plans together with several design partners, municipalities, cities and other stakeholders. The planning aims to start the implementation of the rail line at the beginning of the 2030s and the rail line to be completed by 2040. Itärata was accepted in July 2024 to the expanded European-wide core network for transport (TEN-T). Following the decision, Itärata Oy can apply for significant EU funding for the design of the rail project. The shareholders of Itärata Oy are the Finnish state (51%) represented by the Ministry of Transport and Communications and 24 municipalities or cities. Itärata Oy and its board ensure through active dialogue that the shareholders, i.e. the state and the municipalities, have a common vision of the project's objectives and progress. Other stakeholders in the Itärata project include, for example, the municipalities in the project area, authorities, residents, companies, educational institutions and communities.
