Description

FE 77.0701/2024 - "Competition between public transport and cycling on main traffic routes" On the main axes of urban road networks, all modes of motorized and non-motorized transport (cars, public transport, cycling, and pedestrian traffic) are regularly concentrated. To ensure traffic safety, especially for cyclists, and to accelerate bus services (scheduled, school, and special transport), some road traffic authorities have established lanes that are used jointly by buses and cyclists. Both modes systematically compete with each other for use along the route and have different speed profiles. In terms of implementation options, in addition to the feasible widths for dividing the road space, the traffic regulations governing behavior also play a crucial role – especially with regard to buses overtaking cyclists. Against the background of limited road space, it must be clarified under what conditions the combined guidance of buses and cyclists on a shared lane is advantageous for both modes of transport and which cross-sectional divisions are suitable for this. At the same time, it must be determined under what conditions a shared guidance should be avoided and separate solutions should be sought instead. The aim of this research project is to derive criteria for use and recommendations for the cross-sectional design of lanes used jointly by buses and cyclists. In contrast to separate facilities for both modes, the cross-sections should be determined depending on the available widths and the desired usage intensities.
