The competition aims to initiate a transformation process in the Oldenburger city centre, which includes various measures. The revitalisation of the city centre will be achieved through the construction of multi-storey residential buildings close to the centre, north of the market square on the former Opel site. The market, currently dominated by individual traffic, is to be developed in the future as a centre with a high quality of stay. Public open spaces will be enhanced through the renovation of open spaces. The central urban structure will be preserved. There are opportunities for urban redevelopment between the market and the rampart. The objective of the urban design and open space planning competition is to obtain high-quality designs for a sustainable, coordinated urban development and open space design concept, which will serve as a basis for the subsequent upgrading and reorientation of the Oldenburger city centre.
