Description
The secondary school (built at the end of the 1960s) is a four-story building with an adjacent sports hall in the residential area at Talweg 7, 54634 Bitburg. The building has its own gas heating system with radiators, decentralised hot water preparation, a lift and a PV system; the main electrical distribution was upgraded in 2012. The sports hall is supplied with media technology from the school building. After water damage in October 2025, the basement of the east wing was largely demolished (damage analysis/demolition largely completed). The upcoming renovation should be used to develop and implement a future-proof, space and use concept in the basement that can be transferred to further floors; in addition, the sports hall should be supplied autonomously. The previous classroom wing comprised: 5 classrooms, archive room, student common room, caretaker common room, science classroom with ancillary room and boiler room. The classroom wing in the basement is to be converted into an open, multifunctional learning landscape (the boiler room remains untouched). Currently, 115 students are taught in five rooms; in the future, six classrooms for 150 students are planned. Approximately 30-40 students with special educational needs are taught at the school, in main subjects/sciences with individual support by special needs teachers – so far in the classroom parallel to the rest of the group due to lack of differentiation rooms. The renovation is to remedy this by providing spatially close differentiation rooms. As part of the Startchance programme, there are additionally six educational specialists. The target concept is small learning landscapes, each consisting of 3-4 classrooms with an attached open differentiation room. Planned room use after renovation: 6 equally sized classrooms, at least 2 differentiation rooms, corridor area as open learning landscape, boiler room (unchanged, not part of the planning), sufficient storage areas. Technical building services planning – key measures: Heating/ventilation/sanitary/wastewater/gas: New central washbasin niches in the corridor areas; dismantling of media connections in the science classroom; autonomous supply of the sports hall (separation of cold drinking water, heating, MSR from the main building); conversion to a water-based floor heating system in the wet screed; decentralised ventilation units with HRG per classroom, CO2-controlled; complete redesign of the pipe routes (heating/sanitary) from the floor channel to the ceiling areas. Electrical & IT infrastructure: New floor distribution in the basement with connection to the NSHV on the ground floor via the crawl space (including partitions); new cable routes in suspended ceiling/brick channels; LED lighting system with presence/daylight control, integration into the existing KNX system including individual room heating control; extension of the fire alarm system according to DIN 14675 in the basement including updated fire service running cards; comprehensive LAN cabling (Cat.7/Cat.6a) with 19" network cabinet and fibre optic uplink to the server room on the ground floor. Conveying systems: Adaptation of the shaft pit to the new striking height; relocation/remaking of shaft doors and portals; adaptation of the guide rails, checking of cable lengths/hydraulic cylinders, possible re-dimensioning of the drive; reprogramming of the stop control. A preliminary design coordinated with the fire protection authority of the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm confirms the fundamental feasibility of the open learning landscape from a fire protection perspective, provided there are visual connections within the learning clusters and a second escape route to the outside (division of the basement as a corridor school into two areas/learning clusters). The load-bearing capacity of the existing structure has been tested; the renovation according to the learning house concept is technically possible. The aim is to complete the construction project at the start of the 2027/2028 school year; the construction work will be carried out during ongoing school operations, with noise-intensive work outside school hours or during the holidays. The tender documents contain the preliminary design, the planning documents and the technical statement of the structural planning. The planning documents available include performance phase 1 and proportionally performance phase 2. Further planning must be based on this, as the preliminary design planning has already been closely coordinated with the authorities.
