The Pöchlarn – Scheibbs ("Erlauftalbahn") line is a single-track, non-electrified, approximately 27 km long standard gauge line. The line is part of the supplementary network of ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG and serves as a crucial feeder line for passenger and freight traffic to the main axes of the West route. Given current transport, energy and climate policy objectives, electrification of the line will not be pursued. Instead, passenger traffic will be handled in the future with battery electric multiple units (battery trains). This allows the operational and ecological advantages of electric operation to be utilised without the significant interventions and costs of an overhead line infrastructure. The SEP route 055 Pöchlarn (a) – Scheibbs (e) lies outside the European passenger and freight transport corridors and corresponds to the framework plan route 055. The infrastructure measures aim to equip the line for a powerful, robust battery train operation and for an attractive regional transport in the long term.
