Germany – Construction work for art and cultural buildings – Umbau und Sanierung der Nikolaikirche Anklam zur Integration des Lilienthal Flight Museum (LFM)
Description
The construction project involves the renovation of the listed Nikolaikirche in Anklam. The city of Anklam intends to repurpose, restructure, and restore the Nikolaikirche Anklam. The aim of the project is to, in parallel with the restoration of the urban design of the central market square, dedicate the church building to permanent use as the Lilienthal Flight Museum (LFM) and to reconstruct the tower helm to its original height of approximately 103 m, in accordance with its original form. The masonry of the Nikolaikirche Anklam is characterized by a variety of different types of damage, which overlap in varying degrees of severity and distribution. In many areas, there are higher degrees of damage to the masonry surfaces, affecting both the interior and the facade. In the interior, it should be noted that there are historical renderings that are considered very valuable from a conservation perspective. The comparatively high degree of damage to the architectural surfaces is largely due to the destruction of the building during the war and the long subsequent period in a ruinous state. From the results of the investigations in connection with the assessment of the damage, it can be seen that easily soluble salts, gypsum and increased moisture content, together with building climatic conditions, are effective as damaging factors. In general, the current visible condition of the masonry surfaces is to be preserved and stabilized in its aged appearance. New materials used should blend seamlessly with the existing structure. For the interior, preservation of the existing appearance with visibility of all findings and aging traces is favored. No reconstructive interventions are planned. The implementation of the requirement to preserve the historical substance will be carried out with technologically differentiated methods of restorative conservation, depending on its significance. The highest demands are placed on the preservation of substance in areas with findings of figurative painting and polychrome renderings in the upper areas of the interior. In general, the preservation of the historical renderings and surface findings on the further areas in the interior is sought. As needed, securing measures will be carried out in mechanically endangered areas and parts. This affects material cracks of different dimensions and strong material losses at joints and at the base of the wall.
