The Freihafenelbbrücke (FHEB) was damaged by a ship collision on 28.10.2025. Subsequent investigations and checks by the HPA have shown that the bridge cannot be repaired on site, can no longer be used safely and that the middle section must be dismantled as soon as possible. The road, including the footpath and cycle path, and the central ship passage are closed. Furthermore, the route of the FHEB is to be made available to Deutsche Bahn for the renewal of the railway bridges as a bypass. During the same period, inspections of various structures along the Neue Elbbrücken (B4/B75) route revealed that these structures are in a worse condition than previous inspections had indicated. This means that in the coming years, there will be repeated, significant restrictions on these structures for repair and upgrading works. The temporal overlap with the consequences of the ship collision and the observable traffic impacts create a particular temporal urgency for a remedy. To provide a remedy, it is planned to erect a bridge link immediately west of the Neue Elbbrücken. The bridge link runs immediately west of the Neue Elbbrücken route and serves as a replacement route for road and foot/cycle path traffic in the area of the Norderelb crossing.
