The city of Leuven is working on the restoration and reallocation of its historic town hall. In addition to its permanent political and ceremonial functions, the building will also become a full-fledged public space where heritage, meeting, knowledge sharing and social dialogue converge following its reopening in 2029. Within this broader reallocation, the scenography forms an essential link. It translates the mission and vision of the future operation into a coherent visitor experience in which architecture, heritage, stories, interior design and public engagement reinforce each other. The scenography gives spatial and visual shape to the fixed visitor route and to the visitor reception, the orientation in the building, the educational function and the identity of the town hall as a public meeting place. The contract therefore includes the design and implementation of the concept, the storyline and the integral scenography of the permanent exhibition and of the anteroom, the signage and wayfinding for the entire monument. This aims to achieve one integrated master concept that connects the different sub-operations of STAD_HUIS (see Annex 1 vision text) – Start, Story and Studio – and offers the visitor a clear, qualitative and inclusive experience. The contractor works within a complex heritage context and aligns their design with the ongoing restoration and renovation works, the architectural starting points and the various substantive and technical sub-projects. The result is a sustainable, future-oriented and maintenance-friendly interior that respects the monument and at the same time leaves room for future developments.
