Germany – Architectural, construction, engineering and inspection services – Realisierungswettbewerb "An- und Umbau Weißes Haus zum neuen Schlosstheater" in Moers - Objektplanung Gebäude und Innenräume

The city of Moers intends to construct an extension as a new venue for the Neue Schlosstheater Moers in connection with the renovation of the listed Weiße Haus and Terheydenhaus and the demolition of the adjacent parliamentary wing. The Weiße Haus is a building from the mid-19th century, originally housing a "nervous hospital". After 1960, a council chamber and offices were added to supplement the then county hall. The building itself has been under historic preservation since 1991. The Weiße Haus is located at Kastellplatz in Moers and, together with the Moers Castle, which dates back to 1200, and the Terheydenhaus, which was built around the mid-19th century, forms a valuable and representative plaza. The site available for redevelopment and new construction is approximately 2,500 m². The current built-up area is approximately 800 m². In addition, there is the usable area of the Terheydenhaus. The aim of the competition is to develop an architectural design that meets the functional requirements of a modern theatre operation and is convincing in terms of design, ecology and urban development. As part of the competition, a theatre space with around 150 seats is to be created, which meets today's requirements. The central component of the task is the integration of the new Schlosstheater into the existing cultural and educational mile at Kastellplatz. The project is intended to act as a catalyst for the further development of the district and to enable new synergies between culture, education and civil society. Not least, the listed stock of the "Weiße Haus" and the Terheydenhaus is to be converted and integrated into the new use. The respectful handling of the historic buildings forms the basis for a successful connection of old and new. It is intended to certify the new theatre according to BNB Vario Silver Standard. The competition area at Kastellplatz in the centre of Moers is located in the immediate vicinity of the historic Moers Castle and is part of the so-called cultural and educational mile, which is developing along Kastellplatz. The location in the city centre offers good access to public space and enables stronger networking with cultural, social and scientific institutions.
