The primary school at Melanchthonstraße in Bremen is being developed into a future-proof full-day primary school as part of the legal entitlement to full-day care that will apply from the 2026/2027 school year. The project aims to adapt the existing school site both functionally and spatially to the expanded requirements of future-proof education, movement, and relaxation, and to create a contemporary learning and living environment. The basis for the planning is the pedagogical-spatial concept developed within the framework of the pilot project "Ganztag und Raum" by the Montag Stiftung Jugend und Gesellschaft together with the school, administration, and school authorities. This pursues an integrative approach in which school learning, care, and extracurricular activities are closely interlinked spatially and functionally. The project has a model character and is being implemented as a pilot project and supportively accompanied by the Montag Stiftung Jugend und Gesellschaft. A key element of the planning is the development of so-called cluster structures. These consist of flexibly usable learning, differentiation, and stay areas that support contemporary pedagogy and enable different learning forms. The already developed concepts and plans for the school and the former nursery building are binding and form the basis for further implementation. In addition to the school uses, the establishment of a canteen and the Café Melanchthon on the ground floor of the former nursery building is planned. The colour and furnishing concept for the canteen developed in the pilot project is also binding for further planning. However, the planning for the distribution area is to be checked and, if necessary, adapted. And the kitchen area is still to be planned on the basis of the space program. Another central component of the measure is a modified fire protection concept and the creation of accessibility. This includes the installation of a lift. In addition, the project also includes the replacement new construction of the access and changing tract of the gymnasium as well as a renovation of the remaining gymnasium parts. The existing pre-concept for the new access and changing tract is to be revised taking into account the space program and fire protection requirements. Particular challenge: A central challenge is the construction in the existing building during ongoing school operations. The building complex is to be renovated and adapted step by step. To maintain the school operations as undisturbed as possible, the construction implementation is to be carried out in presumably six coordinated construction phases. This phased implementation requires precise planning of the construction processes, close coordination of all parties involved, and special consideration of the school processes. Interior design also plays a significant role. Concepts for furnishing as well as colour and material concepts already exist and serve as a basis. These are to be specifically refined (built-in furniture) in the further planning process. The interior design is of central importance as it significantly influences the usage possibilities, the quality of stay, and the learning atmosphere. Overall, the project pursues a holistic planning approach in which pedagogical, functional, structural, and design aspects are closely interlinked. Through targeted renovation measures, the optimisation of existing areas, in particular corridors and ancillary areas, and the creation of new room qualities, the school site is sustainably strengthened and developed for the future.
