Norway – Research services – The importance of Norwegian requirements and Norwegian level for the transition to work - NORKRAV

The aim of the project is to obtain systematic knowledge on what importance the Norwegian level has for transition to work. The project shall examine how language requirements are used in different branches, how Norwegian proficiencies are assessed in practice, and what characterises employers who are successful in including people with limited Norwegian abilities. The project shall also analyse what factors contribute to immigrants coming in and staying in work, despite limited Norwegian proficiencies. The knowledge shall provide a better basis for understanding how language can function both as a door opener and barrier to participation in working life, and should be able to be used in policy development and to strengthen IMDi's guidance work and cooperation with employers, municipalities and other relevant actors. This can, among other things, contribute to more precise and flexible language requirements, clearer distinctions between oral and written skills and better adaptations of language requirements for specific work assignments. The project will provide a better basis for understanding how language can function both as a door opener and barrier to participation in working life and how language requirements can be adapted.
