The evaluation of the last series of measurements from the condition assessment and evaluation (ZEB) in the network of federal trunk roads shows a significant increase in cracking in asphalt surface courses in several federal states. The proportion of road sections where the condition value for cracking exceeds the warning value has increased by up to 10 % between two consecutive measurement cycles in some cases. Following repeated exchanges between the federal government and the states, as well as on the basis of multiple checks and evaluations, it has been established that these damage patterns are also observed in newly constructed or comprehensively renewed road sections with comparatively short service life. The causal relationships of the observed cracking are currently not finally clarified. However, existing analyses suggest construction-related causes. The subject of the research project is the scientific investigation of the main causes of premature cracking in asphalt surface courses of newly constructed asphalt pavements. Based on the findings obtained, measures to prevent such damage are to be derived. The results of the project are to be incorporated into the updating of the relevant technical regulations.
