Description

The former Shamrock power plant in Herne has been derelict since its decommissioning in 2013. The site is located south of Herne-Wanne-Eickel station and covers an area of approximately 2.5 ha. The owner of the former power plant is Uniper. There are no decommissioning obligations for the power plant. The site borders to the north on the area of the former mining site "General Blumenthal IX" with an area of approximately 23.5 ha. This former mining site is being developed under the project name "Blumenthal hoch3" into a modern, integrated high- and green-tech quarter with a broad spectrum of knowledge-, technology-oriented and high-value service uses and a cable car connection to Herne-Wanne-Eickel station. The basis for the development is the concept study by Albert Speer + Partner GmbH, which is currently being concretised into a urban development framework plan. For the reuse of the power plant site, the aspect of compatibility with the adjacent Blumenthal site is an important aspect. Both the spatial effect and the intended use of the power plant building are important for the adjacent Blumenthal site and significantly impact the future perspective of the area development of "Blumenthal hoch3". Conversely, maintaining the status quo with unused, dilapidated buildings can have negative effects on the marketing success of the areas to be revitalised.
