The City of Antwerp has launched the 'Sun on Large Roofs' (ZOGD) project, with the aim of making significant progress towards achieving solar energy targets. The City of Antwerp has included in its Climate Plan 2030 the ambition to realise additional photovoltaic installations across the entire territory. Currently, there is still a lot of untapped solar potential on large roofs. A study was conducted to map out the obstacles hindering the realisation of this potential. Based on this study, the 'solar broker' was proposed as a tool to overcome these obstacles. The solar broker aims to activate, support and relieve owners of large roofs in the realisation of the solar potential on their roofs. In addition to this existing complexity, the additional rapidly growing problem of grid congestion is now coming into view. Hence the choice to expand the scope of the solar broker to a broader system approach. The main goal remains the maximisation of PV installations on large roofs in Antwerp, but at the same time, the solar broker takes on an active role in addressing grid congestion and other relevant system obstacles and boundary conditions that can limit the growth of renewable energy and the electrification of organisations.
