Description

The "StudiWood Trier" project involves the serial renovation, conversion, expansion and extension of the existing student housing complex Tarforst I-III from the 1980s, located near the University of Trier. The three four-storey buildings with flat roofs and distinctive S-shaped floor plans in the split-level system are in need of structural and energy renovation and no longer meet the requirements for modern student housing in their current structure and equipment. The aim of the project is to create modern, sustainable and energy-efficient living spaces for students while largely preserving the existing structure. The serial renovation of the building envelope is planned using prefabricated, large-format wooden panel elements with integrated facades and windows. Additionally, buildings House 2 and House 3 will be extended in timber construction. To create additional living space, a single-storey, full-storey extension in timber construction will be realised on top of Houses 2 and 3 and the north part of House 1. The existing housing forms will be converted into modern single apartments and shared apartments; the future living spaces will be newly organised and accessed accordingly. Each residential unit will receive a new bathroom, if possible as a prefabricated wet cell. An elevator shaft in solid timber construction is planned for each building section. The existing energy supply will be completely renewed; the energy standard Efficiency House 55 is targeted for the existing structure and the extension. After completion, 194 modern, predominantly barrier-free and comfortable living spaces will be available. The client places great value on sustainability and resource conservation. This is evident in particular in the use of renewable and regional building materials, including the use of calamity wood (pest wood) from local stocks and the use of certified woods with proof of origin via the "Holz von Hier" system or equivalent. Calamity wood in oak will be used for the facade cladding. These measures are intended to reduce not only the energy consumption during operation, but also the ecological footprint of the construction. For the project, grants from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate from the funding programme "Junges Wohnen" of the Investment and Structural Bank Rhineland-Palatinate (Loan 556, 557) will be used, as well as grants from the federal government from the funding programme "Wohngebäude energieeffizient sanieren" of the KfW for the Efficiency House 55 EE incl. debt relief for a serial renovation. A further funding component subsidises the use of calamity oak wood.
