Belgium – Research services – Interventiestudie naar de effectiviteit van preventieve maatregelen voor vermindering van blootstelling via binnenhuisstof

This contract aims to conduct an intervention study on the effectiveness of existing preventive measures to reduce exposure to PFAS and heavy metals (at least lead and cadmium) via indoor dust in approximately 100 Flemish households with young children (0-6 years). The focus is on the measure "wet cleaning," but also any additional measures or combinations of measures can be investigated. The study should provide insight into:

• the effectiveness of preventive measures for reducing concentrations of PFAS and heavy metals in indoor dust;

• the conditions under which these measures are most effective;

• the influence of the frequency, quality, and consistency of the application of the measures;

• the possibilities for refining existing health advice for citizens.

In addition, the contract aims to strengthen the knowledge base regarding indoor dust by:

• developing reference values for concentrations of PFAS and heavy metals in indoor dust;

• further substantiating a uniform and reproducible sampling method (settled dust) for indoor dust in comparison with outdoor dust.

The contractor is responsible for the preparation, execution, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of the study. The contract includes, among other things:

• project coordination;

• development of a research protocol and study design;

• drafting of questionnaires and procedures for participants;

• development of an intervention strategy;

• recruitment of participants;

• execution of the sampling campaign;

• laboratory analyses;

• statistical analysis and scientific interpretation;

• development of reference values for the measurement results;

• further substantiation of a uniform and reproducible sampling method for indoor dust;

• feedback on the results and support for communication;

• final reporting and transfer of research data.

The results of the study must support the Department of Welfare in further scientifically substantiating health advice, communication, and policy decisions regarding exposure to chemical substances via indoor dust.
