The former Berne School was built in 1929/1930 according to plans by Fritz Schumacher and is protected as a historic monument. The distinctive building in the north-east of Hamburg was closed for school operations in 2016. Since then, the association KuBiZ e.V. has been intensively committed to the preservation and re-use of the school site. After the signing of a leasehold agreement by the fux eG with the Hamburger Liegenschaft in 2023, the building was put to a first interim use in the field of art and culture. The aim is the comprehensive, monument-appropriate renovation and long-term re-use of the school as a community-based centre for education, art, culture, health, social services and common good-oriented commerce. The project combines the preservation of the architectural heritage with a forward-looking, civil society-based utilisation concept. As part of this two-stage tendering procedure, planning services for the technical building equipment according to HOAI are to be awarded. The services concern the planning of the monument-appropriate renovation of the technical building equipment, functional restructuring, as well as the implementation of energy, technical and barrier-free standards. The cooperation takes place in close coordination with the monument protection authority, the realisation carrier of the communal xeG, the owner fux eG and the local civil society actors using the project, organised in the Projekt Schule Berne e.V.
