Description

The Federal Government has set itself the goal of significantly improving the general condition of ecosystems in Germany with the Action Programme for Natural Climate Protection (ANK). The ANK aims to protect the climate by strengthening natural ecosystems. The ANK thus combines climate protection with the protection of biodiversity. Further synergies often arise - for example, for adaptation to climate change. The ANK promotes measures by which nature acts as a climate protector - i.e. where peatlands, forests, bodies of water, soils or green spaces bind greenhouse gases, avoid emissions and at the same time improve habitats. The central goals of the ANK are therefore the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (e.g. through the rewetting of peatlands), the strengthening of carbon storage in natural sinks, the increase of the resilience of ecosystems, the adaptation to climate change (e.g. water retention, cooling, flood protection), the preservation and restoration of biological diversity. The BfN has been entrusted by the BMUKN with the implementation of the tasks of the ANK Secretariat. This office supports the BMUKN in the implementation of the ANK and the ANK 2.0 ff, as well as in the planning, control, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the ANK measures.
