The government district of the state capital Mainz is the scene of recurring changes. It has always reflected the political and social conditions of its respective time. The current design no longer meets the spatial qualities and the current requirements for a central, urban space. The increasing flow of traffic on the Große Bleiche since the 1960s divides the area, while stationary traffic and the corresponding development impair the design of exciting urban spaces and reduce the quality of stay. Against the background of climate change, new forms of mobility, changing communication methods and social tensions, the government district is to be rethought. The aim is to create a contemporary public space that makes democratic values, urbanity and the spirit of our time visible. The government district of Mainz is to be strengthened and designed to be future-proof in its historical and social significance as the heart of the state capital and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Due to the diverse framework conditions, various use requirements and upcoming changes (e.g. the new alignment of the tram), an ideas competition organised by the state capital Mainz will initially develop future visions and development perspectives for the approximately 7 ha competition area. The aim is to advance the discussions about the future of the government district through the perspectives developed in the ideas competition, to identify development potential and to make important fundamental decisions. Only then can a strategy for reorganisation and concrete individual projects be identified and approached in terms of planning.
