Germany – Airport buildings construction work – 2026-1005079_Flughafen München_Generalübernehmer Gepäcksortierhalle Terminal 1 auf Pos. 113
Description
As part of the T/EINS program, Terminal 1 of Munich Airport is being gradually modernized to ensure safe and efficient operation until at least 2050. Since the existing baggage handling system will only be partially available during the renovation work, additional baggage infrastructure is required to maintain baggage operations. For this purpose, a new baggage sorting hall (GSH-113) will be constructed at apron position 113. The hall complements the existing baggage logistics of Terminal 1 and will be directly connected to the existing baggage handling system. It will take over central functions of baggage handling such as sorting, security checks, manual rework, customs checks, and the reintroduction of baggage into the ongoing conveying process.
Building Concept
The baggage sorting hall will be designed as a single-story operating building with an additional steel intermediate level for conveying technology and technical systems. The building has a functional building envelope with a sandwich facade and a flat roof. The total gross floor area, including technical and ancillary areas, incl. grating level, is around 6,000 m². The building height is approximately 9 m and can locally reach up to 12 m through technical superstructures.
Operation and Capacity
The facility is designed for a sorting capacity of up to 2,500 items of baggage per hour and provides the necessary capacity to ensure baggage operations during the general renovation of Terminal 1. In addition to sorting and inspection areas, space for operation, personnel, storage, and technology is provided.
Project Organisation and Procurement
For the implementation of the overall measure, a division into several procurement units is planned. The commissioning of a general contractor for the planning and construction of the baggage sorting hall incl. grating level, a general contractor for the supply and construction of the baggage handling system, and a separate contractor for the connection of the hall to the existing structure (bridge structure) is planned. This will ensure that the respective specialist trades are implemented efficiently and the interfaces between the structure and the baggage handling technology are specifically controlled.
Location and Framework Conditions
The baggage sorting hall will be constructed on a free apron area in the safety-critical area of Munich Airport. The construction site contains existing infrastructure lines, including aviation fuel lines, drainage systems, and power and IT lines. In addition, there is a direct spatial proximity to the existing buildings of Terminal 1 and Hall C-West.
Interfaces
The project has technical and operational interfaces with the existing buildings, supply and disposal systems, and the general renovation of Terminal 1. In addition, a charging point for apron vehicles is planned southeast of the baggage sorting hall. Synergies in electrical supply will be examined as part of the planning.
Energy Supply and Sustainability
The hall will be designed as a fully functional operating building with its own technical supply. The legal requirements for energy efficiency will be met. Use is envisaged for at least the duration of the renovation of Terminal 1 (at least 12 years); further usage periods will be examined in the further course of the project.
Special Framework Conditions
The new construction will take place in the safety-critical apron area of Munich Airport during ongoing flight operations. The planning and execution must take into account the requirements of airport operations, air safety, and the maintenance of adjacent operational processes. Construction and logistics processes are subject to special safety, access, and approval requirements. Existing supply lines in the construction site must be taken into account during construction and must be appropriately integrated into the operating concepts.
Dates
The following project-relevant milestones are specified for the planning and realization of the measure:
- Execution of the planning services of phases 3 to 5: presumably Q2/2027 to Q4/2027
- Start of construction: presumably Q1/2028
- Completion of construction including complete commissioning of the technical building equipment: by Q2/2029 at the latest
The aforementioned dates represent the current project target planning of the client and must be taken into account by the contractor in his scheduling and resource planning. The contractor must organize his planning, approval, procurement, and execution processes in such a way as to ensure that the specified milestones are met. To this end, a continuous schedule management including regular progress control and reporting must be provided.
Overall Objective
With the GSH-113, a powerful and operationally integrated extension of the baggage logistics of Terminal 1 will be created. It ensures the maintenance of baggage handling during the extensive modernization measures and supports a safe and economical airport operation.
