Description

The Vivantes Klinikum Am Urban, commonly known as "KAU", is located at Urbanstraße/Dieffenbachstraße in Berlin, in the Kreuzberg district. The Klinikum Am Urban is structurally and conceptually largely a hospital from the 1960s. It was built in 1968, when neither MRIs nor CT scanners were available. The developments, also in medical technology, have been reflected in the existing structure over the years. Corresponding renovation and expansion measures have taken place in the past. Thus, in 1981, an extension building with an intensive care unit and an operating theatre wing was added. Further intensive renovation and expansion measures were carried out in 1987. As a result of elementary necessary capacity expansions, restructuring measures and necessary renovation measures, a new expansion of the hospital as well as a partial demolition including a temporary modular building is now urgently required. For this purpose, additional new buildings are to be built on the basis of the legally binding land-use plan No. VI-65-1 of 02.02.1981 within the permissible building boundaries to expand the existing building structure.
