Description

The research project aims to gain solid knowledge about factors influencing subjective security at small railway stations. To this end, objective and subjective data as well as studies under real and experimental conditions are carried out. Evidence-based prioritisation of measures with the greatest possible impact on people's sense of security thus emerges from combining analyses. An evidence-based model to explain subjective security at small railway stations is therefore developed in the project. There is currently little data available for such small railway stations. At the same time, increasing avoidance tendencies are being observed there. The focus on subjective security is relevant because (1) the risk of becoming a victim of a crime at railway stations is low, but the sense of security is still poor and (2) measures aimed at higher objective security can differ substantially from those aimed at improving subjective security - these are two largely independent and distinct aspects. For example, more surveillance and police presence can reduce offences and thus increase objective security, while at the same time intensifying the feeling of insecurity, as they signal danger. The basis of the project is a theory-based, comprehensive data collection with large, heterogeneous samples, combined with objective contextual factors and experimental studies. Particular attention is paid to interactions between influencing factors and differences between social groups. On this basis, evidence-based measures for the targeted improvement of the sense of security are to be prioritised and presented in a publicly effective manner.
